Recent years we've been hearing the 'brain drain' dilemma faced by Malaysia. Why? And it has been persistent, year after year. What are the triggers, the main drivers for these talented individuals leaving the country where they were born and bred.
There must be a clear answer, of which most people, especially locals try to contemplate with.
The most popular reasons for people willing to migrate are:
1 Higher pay in other markets
2 Not conducive for professional development
3 Not a suitable place to raise a family
4 Education level has dropped
5 Too many corruption in the country
6 Can’t compete in a fair manner
I would agree with most of the reasons above, I used to be a migrant myself. In fact, I used to live and work abroad for a good 7 years. The experience and exposure gained are invaluable.
Perhaps the most important reasons, out of the 6 that were listed above, if you were to ask me, would be reason no 4. By having a low level, or not "on par" level of education, we basically hampering the future of our country. We are unable to produce competent individuals that will contribute to the advancement of the nation. Plus, the gap between the rich and poor will widen.
Quality education should be provided to all, not to the few privileged individuals or family. By having a level playing field, everyone could compete in the same environment.
Government need to spend more time on structuring or perhaps re-structuring our education system in order to suit current landscape. This is to ensure a more competent society to be produced and compete at the global scale.
Education must not be viewed only at the “classroom” type of education, as practical and vocational educations are also seen as important in the current environment.

To be (developed) or not to be.
Question of whether Malaysia has the ability to gain a developed status has been lingering for quite sometime. Are we, as a nation, or more importantly, as a society, ready to mobilise ourselves into the next level of country's status.
I've always admired Japan, the inventiveness, creativity, artistic nature of it society, and most of all, politeness. I would call that a developed society. As opposed to HK, it is materially developed, but culturally, not as developed as Japan.
"Developed" is somewhat a subjective term when we are talking about a society. Malaysia as a whole, we do have the required infrastructure, only to be matched by the inability, or incompetency of the people to utilise them.
You wont see a badly vandalised public phone in the UK, but in Malaysia, it is a norm. UK is a knowledge society, where people crave new ideas frequently.That explains the reason they're having some of the most inventive and prestiguous academic institution.
Then come to the point where we are arguing the function of our academic institutions. Are they no different from factories that produced large amount of graduates, just for the sake of employment?

Consumerism
'Consumerism' ataupun ada masa dalam bahasa melayu kita panggil konsumerisme adalah sikap atau gaya hidup yg berasaskan pembelian yg ada masa leh jadi extreme.
Kalau tengok dalam facebook, berapa ramai orang2 yg kita kenal, atau kita sendiri, suka post status2 yg tunjuk apa kita beli, rumah baru, kereta baru, ipad baru, kamera baru...semata mata nak cakap kat kenalan lain yg kita beli/consume apa.
Kengkadang, aku pun tertanya gak, apa yg mendorong depa nak tunjuk menda apa yg dibeli ehh......mesti ada sesuatu yg menarik, atau perasaan yg syok kalau tunjuk kot. Unfortunately aku lum dapat rasa perasaan tu.
Leh kata tiap2 hari, menda yg ditunjuk dari semahal2 barang hingga yg murah. So mungkin bukan sebab harga, tapi lebih kepada syok nak expose kat orang lifestyle dia kot.
gi jalan mana, berapa banyak Ipad nak beli, baju apa yg nak pakai, perghhhh, syok kot. Mungkin sebab aku ni introvert, perasaan syok tu belum aku rasa. Manalah tau esok2 aku pun nak post menda2 menarik kat wall aku, hotel mana aku gi makan, berapa ratus aku habis nak beli baju sehelai. Bag tangan apa aku beli untuk wife aku, perghhhhhhh.
Ataupun, mungkin manusia nih dah terkeliru yg consumerism nih leh lead to happiness.....well....

Sedara kahwin
It's here folks, the school holiday season, and that can only mean 1 thing among others............wedding season. My nephew's reception was held yesterday in Melaka. Such a great event, lots of relatives attended, and of course lot of food and calories consumed.
Melaka was bloody hot, no rain at all. On the way back, there was a slight congenstion at Seremban area. Arrived home at 10.20pm.
After shower, the neighbour who stays opposite our unit invited me and wifey to their place. Chatted bout their Hajj experience. Haha, as usual, words bout Tabung Haji (TH) incompetence was the popular topic of the session.
Start to wonder, that I need to register for Hajj with TH. Maybe this wednesday, since I'm on leave. Wifey's birthday, just around the corner.....

Rainy season.....
It has been raining, or rather pouring for the past few days....or maybe weeks, my memory is failing me. But i do love rain. Been bz with jobs, projects, deadlines and all craps associated with it.
So how does the econ looks lately. I was hoping for a drop in car prices. Nah, it wont materialised. But I'm not a car person. I rather take public transport, and reserve driving for weekends. Maybe, once I've got kids of my own, the idea of driving will change.
Election....hmmm, heard bout it a few times...oh yes, Obama won yesterday. I prefer him to Romney btw. US econs in not a very good shape. Obama has been struggling to fix the damage done by his predecessors.
Life has been good lately, but my age has taken toll on my fitness. Feel dizzy whenever i slept past midnight. Gosh, wish i could stay young forever.
I've got a few nieces and nephew graduating and recently graduated. Of all the talks that our econ is doing well, it seems to be getting harder and harder for current graduate to secure the job of their dream.
Just 2 weeks ago, a newspaper reported that our pilot grads are mostly unemployed.....Gosh.
Blame it on the song 'I blieve i can fly'......
Or, now everyone can fly, but not the pilots?

Will start a new job in about a week time.....
Gosh, time really flew damn quick. I'll start my new job in a week time, and hoping for the best. Now I'm down with flu again....must be some viral circulating in the air. Btw, it has been a roller coaster year for me this 2010. Quit my old job, hunting for a new one, talking to people and pondering on what I wanna do actually.
It seems that, i really like meeting new people and dealing with different type of business problem, probably I should stick to this line of industry. Hope the people out there will be looking forward for a bright and wonderful 2011. Happy new year guys to whoever willing to read my crappy blog.

Back to hot sweating Malaysia
I'm back in the tropical surroundings of Malaysian climate. On holiday, and at the same time looking for job back here. Yes, I've decided it is time to return, mainly due to family reason rather than sentimental.
One thing that I've learned for sure during my job searching tenor, was that, most of GLCs are not really serious in bringing back Malaysians who are working overseas. They are comfortable with what they have at the moment, and sometimes can even give you empty promises. I wondered, why is this happening in so called corporate giants' management.
The country is all steamed up with the gomen's proposal of escalating it's economy towards a high income nation by 2020. There's a definitely a lot of hard work needs to be done, many barriers for business need to be demolished, favoritism needs to be eradicated in order to enhance entrepreneurship in the country.
We also need to be aware of the competition coming from our neighbouring Asean. They will of course have their own plan to be high income nations in their own right (this exclude S'pore of course, they are in the top 15 countries in the world's highest GDP).
I'll wait and see, and along the way, will try to observe whether I could contribute anything in term of knowledge and experience, although not much, to help the nation achieve this difficult objective.

Gunung berapi
Aku dah lama tak update blog nih, sbb sibuk dgn kerja. Skrg dah ok skit. Gunung berapi meletus a few weeks back sikit sebanyak mempengaruhi travel plan aku ke negara2 jiran....leceh betul.
UK skang tgh sibuk dengan election.....3 horse race.....macam EPL lah pulak....
Minggu nih dah panas skit, dalam 15 celcius, alhamdulillah, takde lah sejuk membunuh macam winter hari tu. Moga rezeki bertambah di hari2 yg mendatang...insya Allah.

Brain drain
Couple of years back during my short stint in the mid east, I was invited to give a short talk by a university there. The talk revolved around the topic of capital market and its close relationship with knowledge development in the mid east.
One of the main drivers of hi income economies is not just the ability to create and distribute wealth, but also the ability to maintain it. Wealth also should be defined in a larger perspective, not just material and monetary wealth, but should also includes knowledge wealth. A big shortfall for mid east economies is obviously their inability to develop their knowledge wealth which leads to their mismanagement of material wealth.
I can relate this observation to my own country Malaysia. Being suffered quite a huge problem of talent outflows for the past few years certainly will have a fatal consequences if not managed or prevented properly.
It seems that Malaysia has failed to retain its talent pool, which is then enjoyed by better developed economies who accepted these talents with their open arms.
We need to identify what are causes of this talent outflows and most professionals workforce will say that the environment is not conducive for these talents to live and work in Malaysia. Money is not always the main objective for these people, but the ability to develop, learn, contribute and get recognised is far more important.
Hope our government and private sectors will collaborate and find a long term solution to our worsening problem. After all in a move towards a more developed economy, we are in a dire need of these people.

high income economy.....
I've never been good at writing. It is just out of my comfort zone (which is gaming on ps3), but, there's always a but.
One topic which catched my bloody intention in the past few weeks is making or driving malaysia towards a high income economy.
Lots being discussed n mentioned in the press, but the actual method n path have yet to be seen. for the past few decades, there are only a few nations managed to break into high income econ from their origin of low income economy. To mention a few are the likes of South Korea, Taiwan and of course Singapore, our tiny but efficient neighbour.
We started at the same point with these nations, but within 15 years or so, they have overtaken us in term of economics development, and the normal question that everyone would ask is why Malaysia can't?
I'm not the best person to explain or even suggest any method or path that we need to draw for our beloved nation, and I'm sure the people in the government knows better than me. I'm just hoping the plan drawn is beneficial to the whole population without sidelining our nation's values.

Pengertian raya dan puasa....
Raya skang tak syok mcm time aku kecik2. Org skang suka raya depan tv dari visit sedara mara.
Jarang dah dengar bebudak main meriam buluh, ada tu ada, tapi jarang ler, rasa cam kurang meriah plak.
Dulu kecik2 aku selalu perang ngan kampung sebelah, lawan meriam sapa bunyi lagi kuat.....siap ada abang2 yg lebih senior buat meriam tin cat tanam bawah tanah.
Teringat masa bulan posa, aku selalu amik lauk ready walaupun belum waktu berbuka, stand by awal. Hahaha, biasa ahh bebudak.
Bulan posa mmg best, even bila dah besar aku masih rasa syok tiap kali datang Ramadhan, harap leh berjumpa lagi dgn bulan mulia ni next year.
Harap budaya melawat sedara mara nih tak mati ditelan zaman.......aku rindu raya dulu2....

Rumah oh rumah
Hari nih kita borak pasal rumah kat Malaysia, KL especially. Aku dah beberapa tahun dah terpikir nak beli umah, tapi lum kesampaian. Rumah kat KL mahal sangat, mostly kat kawasan2 yg bagus reganya di luar kemampuan aku....arghhhhh...bila aku nak ada rumah nih?
Dari penelitian or kata org putih, observation aku, ada beberapa masalah pasal umah kat mesia nih, aku list kan kat bawah:

- Harga yg pemaju letak actually bukan untuk org malaysia, tp untuk foreigners, kalau tak takdelah rega mahal sangat.
- Hak kita nak memiliki rumah makin terhakis, cuba tengok berapa banyak rumah yg dimiliki dek individual tertentu jer, majoriti kita masih menyewa.
- Kenapa agensi kerajaan cam REHDA tak buat sesuatu, cuba tengok kat area prime, semua harga di luar kemampuan, padahal pejabat tempat org biasa cam kita bekerja terletak kat area prime. Masa yg diambil untuk pergi ke tempat kerja dan kos mmg tinggi. Menda ni leh reduce productivity.
- Kenapa sebab kerana nak untung banyak, hak kebanyakan rakyat biasa diketepikan?
- Sepatutnya, kalau kerajaan perihatin, sekurang2 nya sediakan lah coverage LRT ataupun pengangkutan awam yg reliable untuk manusia bergerak dan rendah kan kos untuk bergerak.
- Orang jaya bertambah kaya dengan membeli property kat area yg mahal dan dijual semula ngan keuntungan yg tinggi, tp camna pulak ngan org yg tak kaya macam aku? Aku cuma nak rumah untuk duduk jer, bukan buat untung. Adakah kita kena aniaya?
Nasihat aku, kalau korang ada simpanan, belilah rumah untuk keluarga, jgn dibazirkan untuk menda2 karut.

Setiap yang bernyawa pasti akan merasai mati....
Dapat call dari abang sulung aku last Thursday, one of my brother had just passed away due to liver failure. It reminds me how quick or how short the time that we, mortals, will live out our time here, in this world.
The next day, cakap kat one of my directors regarding the news, and terus dia bagi aku compassionate leave for a week. Petang, aku book ticket, and on Friday, I'm already on my way back to Malaysia, via Dubai. Its a painful 24 hour journey, with 4 hours stopover in Dubai.
Sampai mesia, mmg penat, dgn medical check kat airport (H1N1 punya pasal), and amik cab, balik umah akak kat Melaka.
Aku pelik gak napa firm non muslim, employer aku leh bagi 5 days compassionate (tak deduct pun annual leave), tapi, kalau firms kat mesia nak bagi 2 hari pun susah, pastu kena immediate family, kalau nak lebih kena tolak annual leave, punya lah kedekut.
Berbalik pada cerita abang aku yg meninggal, mengingatkan aku yg mati nih tak kenal usia and tak kira berapa kaya pun kita, nyawa tak boleh dibeli. Lastly, al-fatihah untuk abang, moga roh mu dicucuri rahmat.
